“The one thing I will always remember and never forget, is your face. Your face at the end of the hallway of your old apartment, as I would leave, and the elevator door would close. Your face when you turned away as you walked down the terminal. Your face on my rearview mirror..”
Wow… talk about a good cry.
Dear God,
Give me this some day.

She was a genius of sadness, immersing herself in it, separating its numerous strands, appreciating its subtle nuances. She was a prism through which sadness could be divided into its infinite spectrum.

late night journal-ing. there really is nothing that calms my mind more than to release everything onto paper (well more like a word document). I wish I wrote more, like when I was little and would fill up those pretty diaries full of thoughts and lists and dreams… Maybe when I’m retired :)
Native American Code Of Ethics
Rise with the sun to pray. Pray alone. Pray often.
The Great Spirit will listen, if you only speak.
~
Be tolerant of those who are lost on their path.
Ignorance, conceit, anger, jealousy and greed stem
from a lost soul. Pray that they will find guidance.
~
Search for yourself, by yourself. Do not allow others
to make your path for you. It is your road, and
yours alone. Others may walk it with you,
but no one can walk it for you.
~
Treat the guests in your home with much consideration.
Serve them the best food, give them the best
bed and treat them with respect and honor.
~
Do not take what is not yours whether from
a person, a community,the wilderness or from a
culture. It was not earned nor given. It is not yours.
~
Respect all things that are placed upon
this earth – whether it be people or plant.
~
Honor other people’s thoughts, wishes and words.
Never interrupt another or mock or rudely mimic them.
Allow each person the right to personal expression.
~
Never speak of others in a bad way. The negative
energy that you put out into the universe
will multiply when it returns to you.
~
All persons make mistakes.
And all mistakes can be forgiven.
~
Bad thoughts cause illness of the mind,
body and spirit. Practice optimism.
~
Nature is not FOR us, it is a PART of us.
They are part of your worldly family.
~
Children are the seeds of our future. Plant
love in their hearts and water them with
wisdom and life’s lessons. When they
are grown, give them space to grow.
~
Avoid hurting the hearts of others.
The poison of your pain will return to you.
~
Be truthful at all times. Honesty is the
test of one’s will within this universe.
~
Keep yourself balanced. Your Mental self, Spiritual
self, Emotional self, and Physical self – all need
to be strong, pure and healthy. Work out
the body to strengthen the mind. Grow
rich in spirit to cure emotional ails.
~
Make conscious decisions as to who
you will be and how you will react. Be
responsible for your own actions.
~
Respect the privacy and personal space of
others. Do not touch the personal property of
others – especially sacred and religious
objects. This is forbidden.
~
Be true to yourself first. You cannot
nurture and help others if you cannot
nurture and help yourself first.
~
Respect others religious beliefs.
Do not force your belief on others.
~
Share your good fortune with others.
Participate in charity.
The Drifter
I’m not sure if there’s a point to the story, but I’m going to tell it anyway.
It’s not until you’re too deep in the well that you realize you can’t breathe anymore. That there is this instant urge to escape from everything you know, to explore the unknown aches that tug at your every heartstring. You find yourself gasping for air, searching for the light; looking for the door to nature and simplicity, the door that leads you away from civilization, consumption, and the everyday constants. You start to wonder who you really are, if there is a purpose for your life, and if you’re on the ‘right’ path. You question your decisions, your actions, your relationships, and your future. You start to see how alone you are; yet little do you realize you are not alone at all.
It’s not until you’re scratching at the slippery, smooth walls of the well that you realize it may not be as easy as it seems. It seems like there is nowhere to go, no one that can help. You’re lost, stuck in this world that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. So you decide you have to do it on your own. You break all ties and head for anywhere, as long as it’s not where you are. You hope to find yourself when you reach a destination. You have a goal in mind, and decide once that goal is attained you will be happy again. Yes, that’s it. All you have to do is get there. Then everything, everything in your life, will be peaceful, joyous, and satisfying. It won’t be until you reach that goal do you realize it’s not what you really want. You suddenly start wishing for something other than what you dreamt from the beginning.
It’s not until you begin your journey do you realize you might not ever reach your goal. It’s frustrating. You may as well turn around. But no, no you keep going, there is something out there for you, you can sense it. It begins out to be the typical journey, defying society, acting like a rebel, living off as little as you can, letting your hair grow long, and ignoring the loved ones who wonder where you have disappeared to. You have fun; it’s almost like a movie. But what’s next? Where do you go? There’s got to be something more, something else, it’s not all there, it’s not how you imagined.
It’s not until you stop caring, stop looking. It’s not until then that you find that genuine smile again. It’s the smell of the fresh air, the child playing in the street, the random thoughts that run through your head, its all of those and more that electrifies you, fascinates you, puts hope back into your mind, love back into your heart, and faith back into your soul. You won’t realize any of this though. It’ll just happen. And you’ll be so lost in ecstasy that you won’t realize this new persona taking over.
It’s not about cutting yourself off from everything and everyone. It’s about taking a little time to rejuvenate your soul and refresh your mind. It’s not about doing something drastic to bring about change. It’s about opening up to others who only want to help and show you they care. It’s not about being a rebel or going against society to make a statement. It’s about realizing the kind of person you want to be and making adjustments to become that person, and even using your wisdom to influence an idea or an action. Little do we realize how simple things really are, but it’s fear that blindsides us into believing it is impossible.
It’s not until you throw all inhibitions to the wind that you realize that maybe; just maybe, it’s not about the escape, but the return. It’s about the detours, the mistakes, the problems that you encounter on your way to this so-called goal or dream. It’s not about the books you read, the people you meet, or the places you see. Sure, they influence you in ways never thought possible. They add a complete new meaning to your life. But that’s not the most important part. The best part is realizing that even after the journey is complete you’ll most likely end up in the same place you began in. But now you have the clear, open mind to build a tunnel, or a ladder, to escape that well you thought you were trapped in. There are options. Find a way to embrace those who you first wanted to push away, embrace the knowledge you’ve gained, embrace your surroundings, embrace the good and the bad, and find a way to smile on even the cloudiest of days. For you are blessed, blessed to be you, to be alive, and to have all that you have. Don’t lose yourself in the notion that there is nowhere to run, don’t lose hope. It’s easy to let it all fall down, but few people realize how much easier it is to just let go. Let go of rules, and expectations, so accept change and breathe. It will be okay, you will be okay.
So when you’re feeling down, stop for just a second and smile, take a walk around the block and let your mind wander. Not all of us are able to fly to Tahiti for a week of vacation, or desert our lives for months at a time, but we can get out. Break the routine that’s holding you captive. Say thank you to mother nature, to your family, to your friends, to yourself. Take a look at your life from a different perspective, encourage and embrace change, ask for help, but most of all, make the effort. Make the effort, show the world your passion, and soon enough that lonely feeling in your gut will dissipate, and that smile you couldn’t seem to find will finally rise again.
